Calantheu Hyacinthus Florimond
You say I've got an attitude
Just 'cos I love a little solitude
And you say I'm callous and I'm numb
But I'm not going to be dragged down by anyone

In the midst of the Cathedral's unkind climate, looking after the available vegetation is as much a full-time affair as ever; just with added consequences if they were to fail. Calantheu manages the greenery spread about the Cathedral, and has a seperate greenhouse to look after the necessary crops and herbs that can't stand the cold outside - plus a few fragile flowers they can't help but want to keep.

ABILITY:
✾ Flower Viel ✾An ability of the helpful sort, allowing Calantheu to strengthen plants around them, aiding in their growth and making them more durable. When concentrated this ability will allow Calantheu to manipulate the affected flora.
This manipulation usually manifests in the flowers having a temporary growth spurt, so Calantheu may use their roots, leaves and branches in various ways. Watch out for low tripping vines around this one. The flora may also be used for obstructing or restraining something; although these are still plants, and even with the extra boost they are still fragile.Flower Veil’s range is limited to Calantheu’s immediate surroundings, and Calantheu will need to be aware of the exact locations of the flora they plan to manipulate. They can also only influence existing plants, and are unable to create new ones with their ability alone.
While the ability can technically be used without limit, Calantheu will experience physical drawbacks when they strain themselves. Overuse will lead to symptoms like headaches, sudden bloody noses and fatigue. Continued overuse will then give them migraines, fever, and a generally lower immune system. Calantheu had to learn their limits the one time they fainted trying to save crops they were researching from the winter cold.

Calantheu is a bit of a conflicting character, appearing ever so bold and colourful yet giving you the stink eye if you ever think this makes them approachable. Naturally this will leave many with the impression that they are rude and temperamental. They will do nothing to correct this impression -- in fact, they encourage it, acting snipey and not hiding their impatience for most interactions.
They appear to not care for bonding much with others, more than willing to burn bridges to prove a point -- if their attitude allowed for any to be built at all.Yet it cannot be said that they are heartless. Calantheu does care, but it is subtle and highly selective. But why else would they be so dedicated to their current faction? They have settled here, and they're not leaving, even if they won't admit the reason being how much they like Saintwood Cathedral. This affection for Saintwood is in part in how much Calantheu feels for its own attitude towards the other factions. Saintwood, like Calantheu, is unapologetic in its existence, and will not conform to the others unless it sees good reason to.Calantheu has similarly claimed their place in the world, stubbornly, using any tool at their disposal, even if that was most often aggression and a refusal to stand down. They make no compromises, except in the amount of people they allow themselves to be at ease with. They will assume the worst, instantly suspicious of people's intentions. Calantheu expects people to be as judgemental as they are, or perhaps worse, and instead of trying to hopelessly please others finding fault in their person, they create more reasons for them to leave Calantheu alone.

|| TW: CHILD NEGLECT | EMOTIONAL ABUSE ||TLDR;
✿ Born near Santalune City, Kalos. Calantheu's parents quickly realize they do not actually want their child. Rather than admit their mistake, they make up excuses to not take care of or spend time them.
✿ Becomes frustrated from neglect and begins acting out at school and any other environment that'll listen to them. This establishes behaviour they never break.
✿ Moves to study botany in Galar at 18, immediately changing their name to what it is now.
✿ Finds a job in Turffield as assisting agriculturist.
✿ After the Rapture; Doesn't notice the Rapture happened until a week later. They're let go when megaflora attacked their farm.
✿ Lived in Ashramsa for two years before moving to Saintwood.
✾.⚘.✾Calantheu was born to a blue flower Florges and an Aromatisse, under a different name, in a town next to Santalune City. While the Flabébé was from a wanted pregnancy, it was clear after barely a few years that the parents hadn’t properly considered the reality of having a child. Soon they would push off their responsibilities to family members and preschool, avoiding spending time with their child without admitting to it.The young Flabébé - who would later become Calantheu - didn’t mind. Of course, their parents were just busy, and when they were home they were just tired. Instead they enjoyed preschool to the fullest. They were honestly sad when it was time to switch to elementary; the classes were much larger, and the teachers couldn’t spend the same time on students who weren’t struggling. They handle that though, because they could still go to their family when their parents were tired! … Until a few years later, when their parents put a stop to this arrangement. They explained that their grandparents were too old to have them around all the time, and their aunt and uncle needed to spend time with their own child, who’d been born just a few weeks prior. Now the Flabébé was left with just home - where their parents dismissed their attempts at spending time together, and school, where they were similarly told off for being too rowdy or asking too many questions. A frustration began to build, something seated deep within them for a while and now beginning to rear its head. Calantheu learned that putting in effort to be good was a pointless endeavor - being good meant to be silent and polite, to be overlooked when they tried things they didn’t want to, while the adults paid attention to the children yelling ‘no’. What was the point in trying when the result was the same? So, Calantheu’s behaviour changed. Not drastically, but just enough. They’d stop sharing their things and stopped being the first to apologize. And it worked. The teachers would ask about their problems, and after one certain argument with a classmate, their parents were called to their school. Their mom bought them a new dress to replace the one their classmate had dirtied. But then that stopped, too. The teachers wouldn’t listen to why Marie couldn’t have their pen (“She always chews on them, I’ve seen it, and this is my special one.”) and their parents refused to come back to school after the first few times ("Yes madame Dupont, I gave them your notes. Have you tried calling them?").Clearly they just weren’t trying hard enough. Soon, Calantheu sought out their arguments and petty fights, gradually becoming known for their bad behaviour. But without a response from their parents, not much was done. One day their mother remarked, off-handedly, "If you want to change schools this badly, just tell us upfront. Your tantrums are getting tiring."They didn't want to change schools. This one had a nice garden, where they'd planted a tree with the rest of the class in first grade. They would always volunteer taking care of the garden, and often waited there to be picked up from school. It was one of their favourite places.
However, when it was time to leave elementary school, they would still demand to go to one in the city. Perhaps some thought they wanted a fresh start, and perhaps that was true - but not to turn over a new leaf. Calantheu did not fix their behaviour, instead becoming worse and teaming up with their new friends. The only difference now was that most of it went unreported. They were disinterested in their education throughout most of highschool, rather spending time upholding their status among their friends and going to parties – they’d even recall this time with some form of fondness, thinking back on a bunch of straight girls encouraging their gender exploration.Their disinterest would come less in handy when it came to considering their future career. They’d never admit it of course, that they were clueless on what to make of themselves. No, according to Calantheu they’d never forgotten their passion for flora, and they’d planned everything out long ago.Regardless of the truth, the now-Floette would go to study botany and moved to Galar. Another new beginning, this time with actual changes – deciding on their real name, for one. The university was kindly informed that one of its new students was actually called Calantheu Hyacinthus Florimond, not whatever it had in its system previously. Aside from the draining nature of academics though, once they’d settled one could say that Calantheu thrived during their studies, finding more moments of peace and enjoyment during it than they ever had before. After graduating, they moved to Turffield for work. There they settled into a mostly-regular job for an agricultural company, becoming an assisting agriculturist who focused mainly on crop protection. Eventually they even received funding for research they were doing on the side! Not much, but enough for Calantheu to be excited about. They continued work on the small piece of land made available to them.✾.⚘.✾.⚘.✾.⚘.✾.⚘.✾.⚘.✾.⚘.✾.⚘.✾.⚘.✾.⚘.✾.⚘.✾.⚘.✾.⚘.✾... Their supply delivery was late. They'd be fine for a while, but some things they couldn't get with a simple inconveniently long trip to the grocery store. Such as the highly specific company-approved materials needed for their research, or just general maintanence. It was the first time they began to question the week long silence on their land.A call to their contact resulted in a shocking conversation. Calantheu would've laughed at the woman's poor joke if it wasn't backed up by every information source they could get their hands on. Apparently it had been assumed Calantheu had disappeared, as well. Figures.
The woman promised to come over and assess their situation as soon as possible, which left Calantheu alone for another week with none of the previous peace.... Perhaps it was all a terrible dream, or a hallucination from some unknown chemical in the ground. Perhaps Calantheu had finally lost it; removed entire cities worth of people from their mind's world. Calantheu was grasping at straws, and they knew it. They weren't as dumb as their silly theories implied. Still, their denial persisted. These thoughts clouded their mind again on one particularly silent day, although they spiraled elsewhere, across the sea.God, when was the last time Calantheu had seen them? Had spoken to them? It must've been on the same day, when Calantheu had hastily made their way across that same sea to their grandmother's funeral. Roughly three years ago.Calantheu considered that thought. They would then go to one of their early growths, carefully angling their phone's camera to capture a small emerging pink flower, of a shade that always reminded them of their father's hair. They sent the picture to contacts called 'Maman' and 'Papa'.They then immediately blocked both numbers. They were brought slightly at ease when their supervisor finally came over, though they were still strung tight. The feeling refused to leave, not with the gentle woman's reassurances, not wh--What the hell was that.Something -- giant, unnatural yet very much so, moving -- was tearing apart their ground, near where they'd taken a picture just a few days before.Something in Calantheu snapped. They grabbed a shovel. Later, they would not disapprove their supervisor's impression that their quick action was out of a strong sense of protection.
Calantheu knew the only thing they had felt in that moment was anger. It was all they could think of whilst they struck the monster until it stopped moving -- of all the time they had spent, studying, working, taken away in but a moment, that their research would be considered 'too risky', how nothing Calantheu had done in their life had mattered, at all.The supervisor called them back the same day, informing them that they would be laid off due to the recent national circumstances. Whatever.Calantheu would join Ashramsa as soon as they heard of the place. Their stay would be cut short after two years (Something about not meshing in well, they would explain without much detail) when Saintwood announced its presence, and they would make a one-way trip to the mountains.
